Conducting an Interview in Lavalier

Modified on Tue, 19 May at 7:36 AM

Lavalier records and transcribes your interviews automatically so you can focus on the conversation. Here's how to conduct an interview and what to expect during the process.

Starting Your Interview

From the Interview Calendar:

  1. Find your scheduled interview in the Interview Calendar tab on the homepage (your default view)
  2. Click on the interview to open the preparation screen
  3. Review the candidate's details and your prepared questions
  4. Click Start Interview when you're ready

From Your Calendar (Virtual Meetings Only):

If you've scheduled a virtual meeting, you can join directly from your calendar invite. Click the meeting link in your calendar, and Lavalier's notetaker will join the video call automatically to record and transcribe.

What happens when you start:

  • Virtual Meeting — Lavalier opens your meeting link in a popup window and the notetaker joins to record and transcribe
  • Phone Call — Lavalier places the call to the candidate using your verified caller ID
  • In-Person — Recording starts using your computer's microphone

During the Interview

Once recording starts, you'll see several tools to help you stay organized:

  • Questions Panel— Your prepared questions appear on the left
    • Mark questions as answered to track your progress
    • Add extra questions as needed during the conversation
  • Notes Section— Take notes on the right side
    • Notes save automatically
    • Add thumbs up/down markers to highlight important moments (these link to specific timestamps in the transcript)
  • Recording Controls — A pulsing indicator shows recording is active, with elapsed time displayed
  • Live Transcript — Updates in real time as the conversation progresses
  • Write Feedback — Start writing feedback directly from the interview view (feedback tools become active after the interview ends)

If a Candidate Withdraws Consent Mid-Interview

For virtual or in-person interviews, recording stops automatically and a dialog confirms you can keep taking notes manually. Click OK, then End Interview when you're done.

For phone interviews, recording can only stop by ending the call. A dialog gives you two options:

  • Candidate Consents to Recording — The candidate has re-opted in; the call and recording continue.
  • End Call — Hang up. This is the only way to stop recording on a phone interview.

Ending the Interview

Click the red End Interview button when you're done. Lavalier processes the transcript in about a minute, then shows you an AI-generated summary with key takeaways.

From here, you can write your feedback or save and close the interview.

What Happens Next?

After your interview, use Lavalier to move faster through your hiring process:

  • Review the full transcript — Jump to specific moments using your timestamped notes and markers
  • Write structured feedback — Capture your evaluation while it's fresh
  • Compare candidates — Ask questions across multiple interviews to identify the strongest fit

All interview data saves to the role automatically, making it easy for your team to collaborate on hiring decisions.

Troubleshooting

My Zoom meeting requires a passcode. Will Lavalier be able to join?

Yes! The passcode is embedded in your Zoom link, so just be sure to paste the complete link into Lavalier.
